Vox Pop pdx at JTTF Town Hall Meeting 1/13/2011

On January 13th, 2011 a Town Hall Meeting was held in the ballroom at Portland State University to discuss whether or not Portland Police should join the FBI to form a Joint Terrorism Task Force. The meeting was very well attended.

Listen to the voices of citizens who came to participate and express their concerns about accountability from local police as well as the FBI. I think it was a really good turn out. You can contribute to this process by commenting here:

Don't Ask Policies? Do Tell!

Today’s episode of vox  pop pdx is titled Don’t Ask Policies. LISTEN HERE.

DON’T ASK DON’T TELL?

What do you think about a national policy that basically states that we must all agree to “not know” what we already know? Is that rational? Is that grown-up? Is that constitutional?

Where is your voice in the matter?

Tax breaks for the super wealthy?, unemployment benefits and jobs? Do you feel like a hostage?

What about wikileaks? What have you learned from the released documents? Do we have a right to know? Do you want to know?

Here’s some interesting food for thought on the subject.

Support for Somali refugee families in Portland, OR

My Voice Somali Organization (MVSO) is a non-profit organization devoted the empowerment of refugees and immigrants in Portland, Oregon and its vicinity.  We seek to educate them on how to achieve a prosperous life in their new-found communities, while preserving their culture and identity; how to become self-sufficient, as well as provide resources that meet their changing needs. We aim to offer support services, provide motivation, counseling (with their cultural needs in mind), general health education, substance abuse prevention, and interpreting services (as a basis for communication in an effort to start bridging the gap between  refugee newcomers and social services for refugees and immigrant youth). Through these efforts we hope to become a driving advocate for the special needs of this growing population.

Somali Unity Rally in Portland, OR Vox Pop pdx podcast → feedproxy.google.com

This is an hour long episode of Vox Pop pdx. I attended the Unity Rally called by the local Somali refugee community in Portland, OR. You will hear the voices of Mayor Sam Adams, local Somali Community Leader, Kayse Jama and other Portland citizens responses to the FBI arrest of Mohamud Osman Mohamud. Mohamud is a 19 year old Somali refugee charged with plotting and intent to use a weapon of mass destruction at a Christmas lighting ceremony in Pioneer Courthouse Square, downtown Portland.

Let’s ask the right questions and have a useful community conversation about Oregon youth in general and what we can do together to keep our communities safe from violence. I have questions about the behavior of the FBI in this case and I hope the larger community will take the time to ask appropriate questions of law enforcement. I am committed to giving a voice to people in the community on this issue.

"Suffragist City" a small survey of Oregon citizens on voting

It would have been nice to sit around a coffee shop or a bar and talk with folks about politics and religion but alas everyone seemed to be somewhere else. It was a beautiful autumn day so they were probably on a nice hike in the Columbia Gorge.  I walked around until I found a few people at bus stops and on the street and outside of grocery stores and working in their yards or painting  houses. I asked them about the upcoming election. The first question I asked is “Are you going to vote?” Sadly, most people are not really very interested or informed. Some are too disenchanted ever since the Supreme Court gave the Presidency to Bush. Several people just couldn’t think of a reason to be interested at all, especially younger voters. But I did meet a handful of people who still think their vote matters.

How about you? Join me on facebook and let’s talk civics.

"The Brautigan Library In Four Parts" podcast credits and links

The fictional library at the heart of Richard Brautigan’s novel “The Abortion: An Historical Romance 1966” isn’t filled with works by William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens or Jane Austen. Rather, it’s a repository for unpublished manuscripts of any sort by anyone.

Now Vancouver is getting its own version of the library Brautigan envisioned, through a collaboration between the Clark County Historical Museum and Washington State University Vancouver. The museum is becoming home to the Brautigan Library Collection, until recently housed in Vermont.

I asked the Poet (his name is James Yeary) to read to you from The Abortion.

Vox Pop pdx in "the couve" Tomorrow at Noon.

Vox Pop pdx in “the couve”.

Our radio adventure guide is native Washingtonian artist Colleen Lindsay.  We go in search of unknown and unpublished art and poetry in Vancouver, Washington. We also attend the unveiling of The Brautigan Library.

Inspired by a fictional library described by Richard Brautigan in his 1971 novel, The Abortion: An Historical Romance 1966, The Brautigan Library provides writers a public shelf for their unpublished manuscripts, free of restrictions on content or quality.

Do you get the idea?

Share your favorite Brautigan verse or passage or maybe one of your own unpublished poems or passages. You can post on the Vox Pop pdx  FB fan page or submit your entry to this blog.

The Brautigan Library is a permanent, interactive exhibit at the Clark County Historical Museum, in Vancouver, Washington. Future plans call for reopening the Library for digital submissions from authors keen to share their narratives.

I will post more info and links tomorrow after the broadcast.

Listen Wednesday at noon (PST) on Radio23’s Cascade Community Radio http://radio23.org/ccr/
